Ernie Finds His Pace

Norfolk Terrier Ernie Walks In Riverbend Park, Great Falls
Puppy Ernie Walking Alone at a Brisk Pace

I’m pretty comfortable going on walks with my pals Hank and Otto, but I figured it was time to give it a try on my very own. Perhaps I should have picked a smaller spot than the 400 acre Riverbend Park, but I really didn’t have any knowledge of acres or big numbers before embarking on any of this.

Hank, Otto, and I started off together, but once I put the thought of them taking a nap and me giving it a shot on my own in the same sentence, they were back in the car and I was headed down the trails accompanied only by my bravery. I was having second thoughts about going it alone after seeing all of those big signs indicating “archery program in progress” but I pressed on.

I started at the Nature Center parking lot and drafted behind a runner to the top of meadow by Jeffery Road. Even I had to pause to look at those 3 big new homes under construction on Jeffery Road across from the park. Since I’m a puppy, just about everything seems huge to me, but near such a wide open park, the homes seemed crowded. Hank would never put up with the endless front stairs on one of them. The video shows I was polite and didn’t stop to stare at all of this too long, but there’s not much that gets past us dogs.

The ground was slippery from heavy rain on the day before, but since I was out in the middle of the woods I pressed on. I kept my nose to the ground and followed the Potomac Heritage Trail all the way back to the Nature Center parking lot from where I started. Hank and Otto were still napping, and I take that as a sign that they’re confident I can pull off these walks all by myself. I’ll definitely do this again.

About Ernie

Fresh face of the group. Up for just about anything going on, except when I'm napping. Lifetime ambition: pinning Hank or Otto in a wrestling match, fair and square.
